Outdoor Ritual for Worshipping New Year’s Eve in 2021

According to Vietnamese beliefs, each year has a different Heavenly Stem governing the earthly realm. The moment of New Year’s Eve is the time for the transition of duties among the Heavenly Stems. Therefore, people prepare an altar for worshipping on New Year’s Eve to bid farewell to the old deity and welcome the new one.

The offerings for the outdoor ritual include five fruits, incense, flowers, candles, areca nuts, betel leaves, salt, tea, sticky rice, vegetarian square glutinous rice cake, and a vegetarian altar tray.

All of these items are placed on a solemn table in front of the house. At the exact moment of New Year’s Eve, the head of the household lights the candles, pours wine, and offers sincere prayers. When lighting incense, it should be placed straight into the rice bowl, without tilting.

The homeowner must perform the outdoor ritual for worshipping New Year’s Eve first before “welcoming the new and bidding farewell to the old,” which means welcoming the new Heavenly Stem and bidding farewell to the old one. After that, the ritual for worshipping New Year’s Eve can be done indoors.

In this sacred moment of New Year’s Eve, as the old year passes and we welcome the new year, we pray sincerely to ThaI Tue Deity, who complies with the orders of the Jade Emperor, oversees all people, and protects us from evil spirits. The former ruler returns to the celestial realm, leaving blessings and grace. The new ruler takes over, embodying virtue and filial piety, bestowing fortunes and prosperity. In this New Year’s season, we, the believers, sincerely prepare flowers and offerings, perform the ritual in front of the ancestral altar, worship the Buddha and deities, burn incense, and prostrate ourselves.

We respectfully invite: the former-year reigning God of ThaI Tue, the current-year reigning God of ThaI Tue, the Great Kings of the Imperial Court, the local spirits of the Earth, and the God of Happiness and the God of Blessings. We humbly request their presence in front of the altar to enjoy the offerings.

Should the Worshiping Ceremony for New Year’s Eve be Performed Indoors or Outdoors First?

Experts advise that the worshiping ceremony for New Year’s Eve should be performed outdoors first to “welcome the new and bid farewell to the old,” which means welcoming the new Heavenly Stem and bidding farewell to the old one. After that, the ritual for worshipping New Year’s Eve can be performed indoors.

In the case of living in an apartment, due to limited space and no ground area, the worshiping can be focused indoors without the necessity of an outdoor ceremony. If families want to perform the ritual outdoors, they should go downstairs to the building’s courtyard instead of performing it on higher floors.

The outdoor ritual requires an open space with sky and soil, so the offerings should be placed close to the ground. Therefore, if the ritual is performed on a higher floor of an apartment building, the space for arranging the offerings is too far from the ground, making it unsuitable to be called an outdoor ceremony.
