How to Calculate the Full Month Ceremony Date: Lunar or Solar Calendar?

From ancient times until now, the full month ceremony, along with other important rituals, are calculated based on the lunar calendar. Vietnam is an agricultural country that mainly relies on farming, so the calculation of time is closely associated with the lunar cycle. This is the basis for determining the dates of festivals and worship ceremonies according to the lunar calendar.

However, in the current era of globalization, the solar calendar is widely used. Therefore, conducting the full month ceremony for the baby according to either the lunar or solar calendar is acceptable, as long as it is convenient and easily remembered.

Note: The calculation of the full month ceremony date for the baby follows the principle of “girls subtract two, boys subtract one”. This means that if a girl is born on the 22nd of the first lunar month, the full month ceremony will be held on the 20th of the second lunar month. If a boy is born on the 20th of the first lunar month, the full month ceremony will be held on the 19th of the second lunar month.

Immediately after the full month ceremony, there will be another ritual called “khai hoa” or “bắt miếng” for baby girls. The baby will be placed on the table, and the host will pour a small cup of tea and request permission to perform the “bắt miếng” ritual. Holding the baby in one hand and holding a branch of flower petals (could be different types of flowers), the host will wave it gently over the baby’s mouth while reciting the following words:

After preparing the ritual items, the next step is to offer them on the altar. The placement of the full month ceremony tray for a baby boy and the arrangement of the ritual items should follow a specific sequence. When arranging the tray, it is divided into two levels.

The lower level, about 10 centimeters below the upper level, is used to place the ritual items for the ancestral spirits. The taller tray is used to place the ritual items for the 12 female ancestral spirits. The arrangement of the tray must follow the principle of “east is the vase of flowers, west is the offering items”, meaning that the east side is where the flower vase is placed, and the west side is where the offering items are arranged.
